Soil Condition: Simple classifications of soil type and conditon: Clay/swampy: Lowlands, pond perimeters, swamps, marshland, possible blue soils, low oxygen, high humus content. Rich Loam: Floodplains, low alluvial deposits, dark friable soil with moderate to high humus content, netural ph. Well Drained: Slopes, steep alluvial deposits, ridges, some stones, medium humus content. Sandy/Poor: Common on dry side of mountains, light color, low humus content. PH alkalinity: Measure of the alkalinity of a given soil, 8 is high alkalinity, 5 is high acidity. Most botanicals grow best in neutral soils, but not all, check your particular botanical. Soils consisting of old ocean floors, ( high calcium content ), tend to have a higher ph factor. |
