Lobelia Cautions |
Cautions: "This species is not nearly as potent as Lobelia inflata, the drug plant, so a scant teaspoon of the chopped plant in tea is a safe dosage. Lobelia is a stimulant to the vagus nerve and can easily produce nausea and vomiting when drunk in excess. If a teaspoon produces nausea, cut down; it is a worthy remedy for lung problems but can easily be overdone." " As a sedative, Lobelia depresses spinal chord function excessively." "One-half teaspoon of the official plant is a safe and effective dose for lung problems." Ref. C p.99-100, "POISONOUS-- may be fatal. Large doses cause purgationn, vomiting, convulsions, medullary and resppiratory depression." Ref. D p.215 |
