              Grasshoppers

Grasshoppers except in coastal area, lay eggs in dry,  undisturded areas along

roadsides,  gardens and empty lots.  Eggs hatch in March to early June depending

on temperature and climate.  Newly hatched nymphs resemble adults but smaller

and lack wings.  Nymphs feed voraciously,  can strip entire areas.   When wings

are grown,  they fly to new areas.  When cultivating in fall,  winter and early

spring,  watch for and destory egg clusters.  Up to 75 cream or yellow rice -

shaped eggs.  They sleep at night in hedges,  tall weeds,  and shrubs.

Use floating row covers or netting or handpick early morning or use disease -

  producing organism Nosema locustae.
